There are 193 countries in this world.

Source: This number is based on the United Nations count of 192 countries, plus Vatican City.

None of them are energy independent.

Energy demand could more than double in the next 50 years.

Source:
World population projected to increase by almost 100% from the current number of about 6 billion people over the next 100 years … along with the growing number of the population future economic expansion, especially in developing countries, could double the world demand on primary energy over the next 50 years.

The world's natural gas reserves:
58% - Russia, Iran & Qatar
3% - the US

Source:
Proved Reserves, as reported by the Oil & Gas Journal, are estimated quantities that can be recovered under present technology and prices. Figures reported for Canada and the former Soviet Union, however, include reserves in the probable category. Natural gas reserves reported by the Oil & Gas Journal are compiled from voluntary survey responses and do not always reflect the most recent changes. Significant natural gas discoveries made during 2004 are not likely to be reflected in the reported reserves.

Some say we'll use up half the world's oil by 2020
Some say we already have

Source:
Per Cambridge Energy Research Associates data, we've used one trillion barrels to date (0.984 trillion from 1900 through 2004). Based on the average of eight forecasts, we will have used 1.5 trillion by YE 2020 or half of the USGS P50 estimate. (110 mmbd in 2020 is the average. That equates to 492 billion additional barrels beyond 2004.)

It took us 125 years to use the first trillion barrels of oil.
We'll use the next trillion in 30. So why should you care?

To power a city the size of Paris
Would take a wind farm 10 times the size of Paris

Source:
735 Wind Turbines in Japan produce 0.9 billion kWh of power with a 15% load factor, 1.8 billion with a 30% factor, or 3.0 billion with a 50% factor. Paris' 11.5 million people consume 90 billion kWh annually. 90 billion kWh / 0.9 billion kWh = 100; 90/1.8= 50; 90/3.0= 30. So somewhere between 30 & 100 times the 735 wind turbines, or between 22000 & 73000 wind turbines would be needed to power Greater Paris (Ile de France).

In the next 20 years the world will grow by nearly 1.5 billion people.
So how will we feed this growing appetite for energy?
